Warehouse Construction Contractors were appointed as specialist subcontractors on a large-scale industrial warehouse development in Watford, Hertfordshire. The project involved the construction of a multi-unit industrial estate designed to serve logistics, trade and light industrial occupiers across the local area.

Our scope of work centred on the structural groundworks and floor slab package, one of the most technically demanding elements of any industrial warehouse build, and the one that determines how well the finished building performs under operational loads for the life of the structure.

What We Delivered

Working within the steel portal frame as it was erected, our team managed the full floor slab construction programme from sub-base preparation through to finished power-floated concrete. The work involved laying DPM membranes across the full footprint, installing reinforcement mesh and rebar to the structural engineer's specification, setting up proprietary rebar chair systems throughout to maintain precise cover depths, and managing the concrete pour and power-float finishing to achieve the tight flatness tolerances required for a modern industrial floor.

The rebar installation visible across the site demonstrates the scale and complexity of the reinforcement package. Modern industrial floor slabs serving logistics and trade counter environments carry significant point loads from racking systems and forklift traffic, and getting the reinforcement right is what separates a floor that performs for thirty years from one that deteriorates within five.

Concrete was supplied by pump and placed in carefully sequenced bays to manage the pour programme efficiently and maintain quality control throughout. The finished slab was power-floated to a high-quality surface finish ready for the fit-out trades to follow.

The project also involved foundation and groundworks coordination alongside steel frame erection, working in close collaboration with the principal contractor's programme to keep the critical path on track across a busy, operationally complex site.

The Result

A high-specification reinforced concrete floor slab and groundworks package delivered on programme as part of a larger industrial estate development, demonstrating Warehouse Construction Contractors' capability to operate effectively as a specialist subcontractor within large principal contractor-led schemes across London and the South East.

The Watford project is a good example of the kind of technically demanding groundworks and slab work we carry out regularly — work that doesn't always get seen once the building is complete, but that determines how well everything above it performs for decades to come.
